The Lagerstroemia, also known as the crape myrtle, is a genus of approximately 50 species of both deciduous and evergreen trees as well as shrubs. Originally native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, the crape myrtle thrives in warmer climates. Within the Lagerstroemia genus, it is possible to find trees that are over 100 feet to small shrubs.

Appearance

Crape Myrtle trees tend to grow quickly and provide a good deal of shade. They provide privacy, shade and beauty all at the same time. These trees can grow as tall as 30 feet high and feature striking blooms. The flowers of the crape myrtle can be white, pink, purple or mauve.

Dexterity

You can expect the crape myrtle to thrive and look its best in warmer climates. Adding to their toughness is that fact that these trees don’t need particularly great soil or high levels of fertilizer to thrive. Those looking for a tree that is easy to maintain will find that the crape myrtle is a good option. It is thus possible to grow crape myrtles in cooler northern climates in the United States; however, it may be necessary to take steps to protect crape myrtles in colder climates. It is also important to note that crape myrtles do not respond well to over-fertilization.
