Echinacea purpurea, or the purple coneflower, is a species of flowering plant in the genus Echinacea. This distinctive looking plant is native to the Eastern United States but can now be found all across the United States.

The purple coneflower is an herbaceous perennial. This means that the purple coneflower has leaves and stems that die at the end of its growth season, but then return every year.

Appearance

The purple coneflower, as the name indicates, is both purple and shaped like a cone; however, it is important to note that the purple coneflower can be found in other colors including white and orange. There is no denying its distinctive look, and the flower has an unmistakable charm. Looking something like the prototype of an idyllic flower, the purple coneflower is an excellent pick of any garden area.

Expect the purple coneflower to reach up to four to five feet in height. The fact that the purple coneflower rarely bends and remains perky helps to add to the flower’s overall beauty and appeal. They are surprisingly robust and will look their best in the summer.

Dexterity

Known for not just its beauty, but also its toughness, the purple coneflower can thrive in dry conditions. The fact that it will grow in a wide range of areas and soil types, including sandy soil, is a strong indicator of the toughness and versatility of this plant. Soil pH level also is a factor in whether or not the plant will take. These plants love the sunlight and generally require very little care and maintenance.
